March 1993 was my first trip to Las
Vegas. We were outside the Flamingo Hotel, across
from Caesars Palace. I stop to notice a statue
hailing visitors just to the right of the gentleman with
the hat and his all important toothpick. I am facing the
Flamingo casino entrance as this character walks
by. He had a kind of timeless look, with the hat,
glasses and the knit shirt. He’s just the cool customer
I was hoping for! He makes the scene and gives it a
sense of scale. There are people walking by in the
reflection, as well as the ever-present construction on
the Las Vegas Strip. The timeless Moody Blues
were playing at Caesars. This was the beginning,
I think, of musical acts that I thought were cool as a
kid that were playing Vegas, something unthinkable when
I was a teenager in the 70’s. Now all the musical
dinosaurs of my childhood play there and as icons! |

I love the art deco
styles in Miami Beach. The inspiration was a trip there
with my wife Dana a number of years ago. I didn’t know
much about Miami Beach other than the TV show Miami
Vice. I was enthralled by the architecture, which
had a real frozen-in-time feel. I had the best coffee
I’ve ever had anywhere in Miami Beach. |

The facial quality
of the truck was the first thing that caught my eye. I
also loved the handmade sign. I feel the most fun thing
about this subject was that I found it in Downtown
Boston, not on some waterfront in Maine or Cape Cod! |
